Shapes and Sizes - Highlife
Encyclopedia Asthmatica Vol 1, Asthmatic Kitty’s DVD compendium of all the bits and pieces relating to their impressive roster of musicians, came in the mail a few weeks ago and with it Achoo! An Asthmatic Kitty Sampler, Vol. 2. Like all good sampler CDs it introduced me to my new favourite band: Shapes and Sizes. I’ll let the track do the talking, but damn if this song isn’t a delightful shitstorm of a record. Get ready to dance with all the contortions of an indie kid on the cocaines.
Yael Naïm - Toxic
First off, I wanted to say it was great meeting fellow Tuneage contributor, Rach, last night at the meet up! Alright, now back to business :)
This is off of Yael Naïm’s latest album, which comes out on Tuesday, the 18th. One way to describe her album is … beautiful. It’s absolutely gorgeous! It’s mainly acoustic French pop. (Perhaps I just made up a new genre? Naaaah…) She sings in Hebrew and in English, yet the album has a very French sound. (Be sure to check out her song Paris on her Myspace page)
I love this cover of Toxic. It reminds me of an eerie circus. The swirling ascending/descending synth and xylophone sounds enhance that feeling. Covers are a great way to interpret someone else’s song. I really like what she did with this one. It’s a completely different song!
Completely fantastic. I’m investigating Yael Naim right this second.
Res – Golden Boys
My rediscovery of Res’s How I Do this week was a major solace with countless deadlines looming large. Written by Santi White, AKA Santogold, it’s R&B for smart kids: brilliantly witty lyrics, sassy, soulful vocals and eclectic, sharp production. It’s one of the seminal albums of my mid-teens, shaping my tastes in ways that stretch beyond mere R&B appreciation. These days I listen to it more as a Santi White album, with her fingerprints being evident throughout, and if you’re gagging for a full-length Santogold release Res’s How I Do is an excellent stopgap until it blesses us with its much-desired presence.
