Frightened Rabbit - “The Modern Leper”
Frightened Rabbit’s The Midnight Organ Fight is an album I got a while ago, on the strength of a lot of hype, but didn’t really give a proper chance until today. It struck me that this would be a great Summer album, and with Summer just around the corner, that’s pretty fortunate timing. Particularly since I plan on listening to it rather a lot. “The Modern Leper” is the opener off the album, and sets a great standard for the rest of the album.

A reblog to show my support for the Frightened Rabbit lovin’. I’ve seen the band five or six times around Glasgow now - one of which being an acoustic session in the tiny pub three doors down from my flat - and they’re worthy of attention. The whole album embodies so much of this city, right down to the slightly strained vocals that sort of annoy you after a while. They’re up there with the Twilight Sad in terms of nostalgic affection and that’s srs bsns.

Battles - Atlas

I’ve been a bit slow on the uptake with Battles. Mirrored, their debut album, sat in my iTunes unlistened for an embarrassingly long time. Recently I’ve rectified the mistake and I’m growing all the more in love with each subsequent listen. It’s obvious why this song was their first single. It thumps along, the beat its one consistency as guitars and vocals interlace sporadically, fostering a strange, unworldly vibe that still feels inherently, forgive me for saying, poppy. I think it might replace LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Get Innocuous’ as my just-woke-up, time-to-engage-reality soundtrack. Buy the album at your soonest possible convenience (assuming you’re dawdling like me).

Kelis (feat. Andre 3000) - Millionaire

I can’t believe I forgot this song was on the album Tasty. It was pretty much Nintendocore before Nintendocore existed (simplier, better times I feel), only with a thoroughly soulful R&B vibe. Andre 3000 lends his endless charisma to Kelis’s already major allure and amazing things happen. Reminisce about summers that probably didn’t play out the way you remember them … but enjoy the manufactured nostalgia anyway.

When did all this Santogold activity start kicking off? Her MySpace is all spangly, her album has a release date (hells yes) and she has a video. With a horse. And lots of weirdly disturbing simulated violence using textiles and paint. May can’t come soon enough.

My Brightest Diamond - From The Top Of The World

I only, uh, acquired an advance of MBD’s A Thousand Shark’s Teeth about three hours ago and iTunes tells me I’ve listened to the whole thing six times already. Completely transcendent and gorgeous. I can’t be any happier at the moment. I’m already starting to make comparisons to Bjork, with MBD following a similar Debut/Post pattern with Bring Me the Workhorse/Thousand Shark’s Teeth, and we all know how well that turned out. The inner-fanboy has never felt so appeased. Let me buy this record immediately.

Shapes and Sizes – Head Movin’

From the same album as the previously posted Highlife, this track is a bit easier to get your head around. Less shambolic, more traditional in structure, but no less jubilant. I’m honestly falling in love with this band. Buy Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner at your soonest possible convenience (assuming you’re slow on the uptake like me). Music perfect for cruising through spring and ushering in the summer.

Encyclopedia Asthmatica Vol 1, Asthmatic Kitty’s DVD compendium of all the bits and pieces relating to their impressive roster of musicians, came in the mail a few weeks ago and with it Achoo! An Asthmatic Kitty Sampler, Vol. 2. Like all good sampler CDs it introduced me to my new favourite band: Shapes and Sizes. I’ll let the track do the talking, but damn if this song isn’t a delightful shitstorm of a record. Get ready to dance with all the contortions of an indie kid on the cocaines.
